After it was established, it was the only ferry across the Ashley. There was also a bridge across the Ashley several miles to the north – Bacon's Bridge at Dorchester.

By 1730. Ashley Ferry Town was established on the south bank of the Ashley River at the ferry site.
When British troops swept through the area in the spring of 1780 and captured Charleston, however, they burned the popular Ferry House tavern and most of Ashley Ferry Town
